i’m slow at posting these bad boys, i know, but real life doesn’t stop long enough for us to get a break. not that i’m complaining, it’s all good activity, there’s just a lot of it.
so the last report left us driving through the night hoping to get into idaho by sunrise. we passed through the eastern half of oregon through the wee dark hours of morning, missing the spectacular visual eyecandies that are pendleton, lagrande, baker city, and ontario oregon. in case you’re wondering, that was dripping with sarcasm. as the sun began to come up, we crossed the time zone line and soon after the oregon/idaho border. it was quickly becoming clear that while we’d definitely make idaho by sunrise, we were going to need caffeine-laden beverages soon, especially if we were going to make it through the wasteland of the next 100 miles or so. unfortunately, growing city though it is, boise does not have easily located coffeeshops that are OPEN at the veritable butt-crack of dawn. so we chose to push forward to the next town, figuring that by mountain home, idaho, it would be 6am and even middle-of-nowhere coffee establishments are open at 6am.
mountain home is a quaint little town. i would have really liked to find a local coffee genius roasting and brewing something magical. instead we found “moxie java”. yeah. overpriced, overroasted, poorly made… oy. didn’t actually finish the coffee… but the coffee got into the bloodstream, and that was all we were after. we had southern idaho, the corner of utah, and wyoming yet to go. figuring lunch would take place somewhere in utah, and figuring we were a good 14 hours or so from our destination, we stopped at a park to let the kids run crazy before we hit the road again. this particular park had a big ol’ f-16 on a stick. apparently the park was named after a famous local who flew fighter jets.
once the wiggles were worked out, we set off on several hours of trading off the wheel in very short intervals. the night’s lack of sleep was beginning to catch up with us, and we were beginning to wonder if a mid-wyoming camp stop was in the cards for the night. at this point, our only solid plan was to go as far as possible before lunch.
7:30am – now on I-80 heading towards Ogden, UT – join us for the next episode which finds us discovering the joy that is chocolate cream pie milkshakes from sonic.
