moving sidewalk

i can’t hardly believe we’ve been here a week already. the photo above was of the moment zoe figured out she could walk backwards on the moving sidewalk and stay in place. she giggled loudly at her discovery.

the kids were just fine at the airport. it was not very crowded, though i’m sure it got crazy later on in the day. we got there bright and early at 6am (left the house at 5:15!), and by lunchtime we were kicking it here at dad’s house in the ‘couv. that was last wednesday… this wednesday, we’re getting set to head down to bandon for a week on the oregon coast, having had the christmas explosion here in vancouver.

sunday and monday involved attending services at compass… it was odd being “just visitors” for the first time ever. i had never walked into that building without being a member of the staff before, so it was a peculiar kind of feeling to not be responsible for anything. it was nice in a way– made me a bit melancholy in a way too. what a strange bag of emotions that came with that whole thing. ultimately, it was awesome to see everyone. weve had some good time hanging out with friends. that what we miss the most.

so by tonight, we’ll be kicking it in bandon, for a week of quiet and relaxation, then on the 2nd we’ll head back up here for more crazy fun. i’m bummed out that we missed the big christmas snow in denver… it “snowed” here on christmas, but ultimately it’s just really wet, like normal. it was nice to see snowflakes in the air though.

week one of epic monster vacation — in the books.

on the road, figuratively speaking

luggage

well… our stuff is packed (that’s most of it there… minus the kids carry-on stuff) and we’re pretty much ready to go. i think i packed an amazing amount of stuff into a relatively small bag. we’ve taken care of most of the little things here at the house, and we’ll be heading out at the ever-so-quickly-approaching hour of 5am mountain time toward the airport. it’s a bit of a drive out to denver international… but once there, we’ll just have to power through security, then it’s smooth sailing.

we’ll see you on the other side of the cascades.

peace.

CDOT photo

it’s another snowy day here in colorado… the above picture is from a CDOT traffic camera just a few miles from our house. it’s stayed pretty cold, so the 6 inches from earlier in the week was still around, and now there’s another good couple inches, with a bit more expected by tonight. it’s supposed to clear up after midnight, so i’m guessing once the plows hit, the roads won’t be too bad tomorrow. it’s going to get crazy cold tonight (5 degrees for the low), so what slushy junk stays on the roads will certainly ice over… that will be the biggest danger. we’ll just take it easy on up to the mountains tomorrow.

i realized this morning that my last post was awful whiny, and the cold/flu i was feeling really never materialized into much of anything. go immune system go! i’ve been working like mad lately… between the church up in eagle and some of the web projects i have going on, i’m suddenly very busy. this kindof came as a shock, because i wasn’t really expecting it. the networking i’ve been doing is starting to pay off, i think. it’s time to take the design side of my business seriously, though. i haven’t printed cards, so it’s hard to expect much referral business. i’ve been asked for cards enough lately that it’s time to get them done. i think i’ll model them after the design of this site.

speaking of the design of this site, i’ve let it sit long enough to get a good feel for what i need to do to change it. i think one round of revisions and it will be good enough to release as a ‘public’ theme. one thing i need to do is change from grey to white text, and increase the size by a pixel or two. it’s amazing how much difference one pixel in font size can make. here’s a question to the web design capable among you– what’s your preferred method of defining text size — px, pt, em or %? i’m not clear on the benefits or drawbacks of each, and i’ve just been using px because it’s easiest. speaking of design questions– any advice on optimizing for safari/mac? i can do the firefox/IE balancing job… i hate it, because i end up just using an IE specific stylesheet… but it’s the best method i’ve found. but i don’t want to do the same for safari, if i can avoid it. advice?

the nice thing about having so much work, is that, believe it or not, there’s a corresponding increase in the income coming into our household. this last month was rather dicey… paying bills on time was really not an option, and rent almost didn’t get paid at all. but then all that work i had booked out broke through, and it looks like we’ll be able to take our vacation to the NW without concern for utilities or rent getting left unpaid. and i probably won’t even have to do much work at all while we’re gone– a 3 week break! this excites me.

speaking of– next wednesday, we’ll rouse our kids at the lovely hour of 5am, gather all our crap, and meander to the bustling sea of humanity that is denver international airport at holiday time. our flight leaves at roughly 8-something-am, and we’ll be touching down at PDX somewhere in the 10:45-ish range. our plan is to attend compass on the 23rd and 24th, and head down to bandon on the 26th through the 2nd. we’ll have all kinds of gatherings and stuff on the in between days. then from the 2nd through the 7th we’ll be back in the ‘couv. we leave on the afternoon of the 7th, and will be back in denver by 7-something that evening. the next morning, i’ll head up to eagle, so i effectively won’t be back to normal life until the 10th… a full 3 weeks away! our calendar will be filling up, but rather fluid at the same time, so please be in touch with us if you want to hang out. i can’t guarantee we’ll be able to call everyone, so to avoid missing you, please bug us! we want to see as many people as possible… but even 3 weeks is filling up remarkably fast.

so today i’m sitting at caribou coffee, trying to put the finishing touches or sufficient progress on a few projects, so that when we leave next week i don’t have to fret about unfinished work. it’s been a busy morning, and i’m sitting too close to the door. i get blasted with 22degree air everytime someone comes in or out. it’s finally emptied out here, so perhaps i’ll move to the other corner.

if i don’t get a chance to post again before christmas, i hope you all have a wonderful christmas. peace out.
